GCCHD Friend in Corvallis!

“Is that Jill Wells?”

I heard this as I was walking down 2nd street to have lunch with a friend?  I whirled around and saw a blast from the past!  Yes my friends, I saw Shernaz Reporter!!!  I squealed like a little girl and gave her a big hug!

Shernaz’s family lives in Corvallis and she was out visiting them and I was elated to see a face from Ohio!  She is just as funny as I remembered.  We agreed to meet-up for a drink while she was in town.  I had seen Aaron, her son, in a store just shortly before I saw her.  I didn’t recognize him though.  The last time I saw Aaron, he was 12 or 13.  He’s 16 and practically a man now. He’s thinking of going to Oregon State for college and majoring in Graphic Design.

We met at Laughing Planet for a drink and some food, but most importantly we needed to chat and catch up.  She and I worked at the Greene County Combined Health District in Xenia, Ohio a few years back.  I left in 2007, but she’s still there.  She updated me on all the changes, not all for the best, at GCCHD and her accomplishment with collaborating with Wright State University for a grant on HIV/AIDS prevention.  She was always awesome at her job and still is.  She’s a hard worker and is underappreciated at that place.  I’m glad I got out when I did as did a lot of people who left around the same time I did.

I had a great talk with Shernaz about work, life, relationships and she really helped me gain some perspective on a few things. I got some wonderful advice. As always, she had condoms on me and offered them to me, but I declined since I have no use for them.  That is one part of the job I do miss…finding condoms in the most random spots.  Hey, when you talk about HIV prevention, you need condoms!

Favorite convo related to my job at GCCHD:

Friend: Jill, why do you have a box of a 1000 condoms?
Me: Oh, I work out of my car.
Friend: What do you do that you need a 1000 condoms?  You must be good at your job.
Me: HA!  No, I don’t do THAT.

I hope she looks me up the next time she’s in town.
