Rugby 7s Tournament in Corvallis

I am a true forward and I hate 7s.  It’s just a bunch of backs running around and having fun because they don’t get to do much during 15s…the real rugby. They don’t get to score that much in 15s because there’s always some bad ass loose forward or dazzling lock/prop there to prevent the breakaway.  You know it’s true backs, so just sulk like a winger because you never get it.

I’m kidding…a little.

Corvallis Motley vs ORSU
The Corvallis Brewers held their second annual 7s tournament on June 23rd.  The Eugene Gentleman brought some of their players up, but the Reign didn’t have a full 7s team.  I believe there weren’t so many Eugene ladies, because the Reign is filled with a bunch of awesome forwards.  Brittany (8man, I guess she was just curious because why else would she want to play 7s) and Kelly came up to whore out though.  Good for them.  Even if I was well enough to play, I still wouldn’t play 7s.  Brittany and Kelly joined forces with a currently forming Corvallis women’s team.  I know I should join since the practice pitch is within walking distance, but those Reign girls are just too awesome to leave.

I made sure to watch the both Corvallis teams and the Eugene Men’s team.  The Corvallis ladies were pretty much comprised of all whores except for one girl.  I also cheered on OSU to annoy my Duck buddy Brittany.  It’s like when I talk about how inferior Ohio University is compared to Miami.  KJ knows Miami is WAY better than OU though.

This is NOT a REAL scrum.  boooooo 7s
Although Brittany had never played 7s before and was surrounded by a bunch of backs, she did really well.  I could tell she wanted to ruck, but what great forward doesn’t?  Poor Kelly got rocked a few times.  She took a rough tackle during the ORSU match and when she got up blood was POURING down from her nose.  It was gross, but she’s a trooper and survived to play another match where when she was tackled, her back cracked over someone’s knee.  She was pretty much done after that.
The pitch held some pretty prestigious Oregon Lady Ruggers.  Hannah Lockwood from Oregon State University was recently named one of RugbyMag.com's Collegiate All Americans for 2010-11.  Hannah has also played for USA Rugby’s U-20.  I got to witness why even if she was just playing 7s.  I heard that there were also a few Eagles playing with the ORSU (Oregon Sports Union) premier rugby team.
I don’t remember how the men did, but the Women’s Corvallis Motley Team won second place and ORSU claimed 1st.  Brittany took the prize since no one wanted to claim it.  I don’t know why, because it’s so freaking awesome.  It’s a shirtless man that can hold a beer can.  It was Hilarious!!!
Some dude from the Seattle Breakers tried to make a mouthguard out of cardboard.  I am thankful that is friend had a spare for him to use so he wouldn't be Pizza Box Mouthguard guy.
I did have a great day watching rugby.  Mostly I just liked watching rugby men in scrum shorts, even if it was just a bunch of scrawny, chicken legged backs.

Eugene ruggers Lorenzo and Brittany.
We were told that there was going to be a Juggernaut Match before the finals.  I was very excited to see a 7s match where men who were 240+ pounds played against men who were over 40 years of age.  Apparently these men were too tired to play in another math, so there was no Juggernaut spectacle.  I was very sad.

CRFC Hosts made themselves a prize.  It's totally cute.
As with any rugby tournament, there was a social.  We headed over to Downward Dog (after a pit stop at my house) to socialize with the other teams.  The ruggers from Eugene did not take showers, but it seems like many ruggers did.  Who showers before a rugby social?  Eventually other teams showed up to Downward Dog all pretty and smelling of soap instead of sweat. Silly backs. Some awful service chased us across the street to another Corvallis Rugby Club Sponsor, Flat Tail Brewing.  We all crammed into the tiny area where they play darts.  Had we been able to occupy more space (they had other patrons) we could have stayed longer, but we were motivated to move to my favorite Rugby bar in town, Harrison’s.  There was karaoke and debauchery.  Good times.

YAY!  Karaoke at Harrison's!!!
Brittany and Kelly stayed at my place for the evening and an abandoned Eugene Gentleman stayed on my couch. Always willing to let people crash and the cats like the company.  Thomas liked snuggling with Timbers who left covered in cat hair.

I look forward to next year’s tournament as it should turn out to be just as fun.  Will I play?  Only if 7s gets more interesting.
Tori, on the right with the scrumcap, was the only true Corvallis woman.
